Mayors Update - Councillors Submission to the Assistant Minister
SUBMISSION SENT FROM THE MAYOR TO ASSISTANT MINISTER THE HON NOLA MARINO IN RESPONSE TO HER NOTICE OF INTENTION TO SUSPEND THE NORFOLK ISLAND REGIONAL COUNCIL UNDER SECTION 438I OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 1993 (NSW)(NI)
“As the community is aware Assistant Minister the Hon Nola Marino MP advised Council by letter of 15 December 2020 of her intention in accordance with section 438K of the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW)(NI) (APPLIED Local Government Act), to suspend the Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) under section 439I (stet) for a period of three months.” Mayor Adams said. “The Assistant Minister’s letter further extended an invitation in accordance with section 438K of the applied Local Government Act, for NIRC to make submissions to the Assistant Minister in respect of the proposed suspension within 28 days after the day on which this notice is given to NIRC. The Assistant Minister has given an undertaking to consider all submissions made to her by NIRC during this period before deciding whether to suspend NIRC’.”
“In the interests of transparency and accountability the Assistant Minister’s letter, along with relevant documentation, were tabled for inclusion in the Council minutes of 16 December 2020 so that members of the community can make themselves fully aware” the Mayor said.
“I have today forwarded to the Assistant Minister a lengthy submission on behalf of NIRC dated 8 January 2020 in response to the Minister’s invitation. For the information of the community the submission will be available on the carousel on the front page of Council’s website www.norfolkisland.gov.nf and on Council’s Facebook page.” Mayor Adams said.
