Council Election 2020
Council elections will be held this year on Saturday 14 November 2020; the election is to elect five councillors of the Norfolk Island Regional Council.
A councillor holds office for four years, subject to the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) (NI).
The election office is managed by the Australian Election Company and will open on 1 October 2020.
In order to be eligible to vote in this election you will need to be enrolled on the Commonwealth electoral roll, the closing date for the roll to be used for the Council election is Monday 5 October 2020. A Norfolk Island Resident whose name is on the electoral roll must vote at the election.
The Commonwealth election roll for Norfolk Island is managed by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). To check if you are enrolled on the Commonwealth electoral roll, you should check your enrolment on the AEC's website at www.aec.gov.au/check or by contacting the AEC. Contact details for the AEC are available on their website at www.aec.gov.au/contact If using the online enquiry form, Norfolk Island residents should:
- select ‘Voting and Enrolment’ from the dropdown box next to ‘Topic’
- select ‘ACT’ as their location from the dropdown box next to ‘State or territory’
- click on the words ‘My question is related to enrolling and voting in federal elections’.
Norfolk Island residents need to enrol on the Australian Electoral Commission website https://www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/Special_Category/norfolk-island-electors.htm If enrolling for the first time and/or updating your enrolment information, Norfolk Island residents need to select ACT as their State or Territory. Norfolk Island is in the federal electorate of Bean in the ACT.
Norfolk Island residents do not have to provide a phone number when enrolling on the AEC website, however, you are encouraged to provide an email address so the AEC can communicate with you about your enrolment.
Council maintains the roll of non-resident owners of rateable land on Norfolk Island as well as the roll of occupiers or rate paying lessees of Norfolk Island land. In order to be eligible to be included on this roll you will need to make application to the General Manager. To qualify to make application for inclusion on either of these rolls you must be:
- enrolled on the Commonwealth electoral roll and,
- a non-resident owner of rateable land on Norfolk Island or,
- an occupier or rate paying lessee of Norfolk Island land.
Applications for inclusion on a roll managed by Council can be emailed to regionalcouncil [at] nirc.gov.nf (subject: Election%20Roll) When submitting an application please ensure that you provide supporting evidence including confirmation of your enrolment on the applicable Commonwealth electoral roll.
Postal voting will begin after 15 October 2020 and pre-poll voting will begin on 2 November 2020.
